Blue Training Courses – four open source trainings focusing on marine and coastal ecosystems

Climate change is challenging coastal and marine ecosystems. To strengthen capacities among decision-makers, the Blue Solutions Initiative developed four modular training courses – the Blue Training Courses – focusing on climate change adaptation, ecosystem services, conservation finance and marine spatial planning:

  • Blue Climate Change and Adaptation (CCA, 3-5 training days) introduces the theory and practical starting points for climate change adaptation in coastal and marine areas. This tailor-made training course enhances capacities among development actors and supporting institutions in successfully taking action on blue climate change adaptation.
  • Blue Integrating Ecosystem Services (3-5 training days) focuses on the linkages between ecosystem services and development objectives and conveys the theoretical background of and practical steps for integrating ecosystem services (IES) into marine and coastal planning. It introduces tools and methods for assessing and valuing ecosystem services, main policy options and instruments to capture ecosystem services-related risks and opportunities as well as entry points for decision-making.
  • The Blue Conservation Finance course (1-2 days) introduces opportunities and approaches for financing marine conservation, enabling factors for the development of conservation finance mechanisms, and key steps for their establishment. Examples of the implementation of financing mechanisms in the marine and coastal realm are featured in this publication.
  • The Blue Planning in Practice (BPiP, 5 training days)

All training materials are opem source and available online. Please see further details here.

Learning Briefs of the EbA Community of Practice now available online

How to mainstream Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) in national and subnational processes? How to generate evidence on effectiveness and what are success stories on communicating EbA to a wider audience? What are opportunities and instruments for financing EbA measures at different scales? And how to set up monitoring and evaluation (M&E) systems and indicators to track adaption results?

At the 2nd International EbA Community of Practice Workshop, around 80 experts from governments, research and policy institutions, and civil society from 22 countries came together for a stocktaking on

  1. Entry points for EbA mainstreaming in national and subnational processes (NAP, UNFCCC & CBD synergies, linking national and subnational policies),
  2. Evidence on EbA effectiveness and its sucessful communication,
  3. Finance options to sustain EbA measures, and
  4. Monitoring and evaluation on EbA success.

Four learning briefs summarizing the outcomes of the workshop sessions are now available here.

Largest expert meeting worldwide on Ecosystem-based Adaptation in 2017 took place in Bangkok

What are the recent developments at global and national level and experiences on mainstreaming ecosystem-based adaptation? What are promising entry points for mainstreaming EbA? How to measure success of EbA to demonstrate and communicate EbA impacts? Which public and private options are available to sustainably finance EbA? And how to best generate and use evidence on EbA effectiveness?

At the 2nd International EbA Community of Practice Workshop, around 80 experts from governments, research and policy institutions, and civil society from 22 countries came together to exchange on selected topics defined during the 1st workshop in June 2016. The workshop was structured around plenary and parallel discussion sessions that aimed to contribute to four core objectives: Identifying entry points for EbA mainstreaming; monitoring and evaluation of EbA; financing challenges and opportunities; evidence of EbA effectiveness.

The documentation will be made available on the EbA subsection on www.AdaptationCommunity.net.

The workshop was organized by the global BMUB IKI-funded project “Mainstreaming EbA – Strengthening ecosystem-based adaptation in planning and decision-making processes” implemented by GIZ.
