This position paper reflects on the potential of agroecology for a sustainable transformation of agricultural and food systems. Such a transformation is not only necessary due to the ecological and social costs and low crisis-resilience of the systems predominant today, but also economically unavoidable in the long–term. Considering GIZ´s many years of positive experience in implementing agroecological approaches, the paper elaborates on five positions. Additionally, it provides a set of recommendations on the most important actions that need to be taken and gives an overview of useful tools and trainings as well as guidelines.
