The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), the  Support Project for the Implementation of the Paris Agreement, and the Global Project Mainstreaming EbA as a contribution to the NAP Global Network and Friends of EbA (FEBA)  are excited to share two new publications on Building Resilience with Nature.

Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) has the potential to generate economic returns and provide multiple benefits, such as improved health, biodiversity protection, food security, and alternative livelihood opportunities, all of which can build resilience to climate change. But how can we ensure EbA is fully maximized and delivered at the scale and pace needed? The answer is clear: it must be put at the heart of countries’ national development and climate strategies. The National Adaptation Plan (NAP) process provides an opening to do just this. By enabling countries to strategically integrate adaptation into their decision making, planning, and budgeting, the NAP process strives to make adaptation part of standard development practice.

Against this background, these two publications have been developed in collaboration. The first publicationreviews how EbA has been incorporated into 19 National Adaptation Plans (NAPs). The analysis highlights the extent of integration and identification of ecosystems and EbA into NAPs, trends in how EbA was incorporated, and opportunities to strengthen the profile and quality of EbA.

Building upon the lessons learned in this analysis, the second publication identifies guiding principles and recommended actions along the steps of the NAP process to integrate and enhance EbA. It further presents an overview of ecosystems, ecosystem services and their role in adaptation, and highlights how managing their transformation can contribute to reducing climate risks.

In addition, the following video captures how EbA’s opportunities and outcomes can be strengthened through a country’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP).
