Climate change poses a significant threat to the sustainability of agricultural and food systems, to the availability of natural resources and to the livelihoods of people and communities. In many rural areas around the world, the effects are particularly severe.

Here you can find a compendium of existing tools/methods/guides for climate change adaptation and mitigation in agri-food systems and an interactive product landscape that complements the compendium and gives a visual overview of and easy access to the tools as well as additional relevant documents.

For six years now, the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and GIZ’s Global Programme ‘Human Mobility in the Context of Climate Change’ have collaborated in their aim to human mobility as a consequence of the region’s increasing environmental challenges. A newly published article by the OECS describes how the partnership looked like and how the organisations took action through strategic thinking, capacity building, and publication of various knowledge products.

The GIZ’s Global Programme on Human Mobility in the Context of Climate Change celebrated the end of the first Programme phase. For this, partners from the Philippines, East and West Africa, the Pacific and the Caribbean came together at the GIZ Campus Röttgen in Bonn. The three-day long event took place from 24th until 26th October and incorporated a networking experience on the last day with experts from politics, decision-making, academia and civil society.

The newly developed eLearning course by GIZ in collaboration with UN University is now available! In this interactive self-paced course, policy makers, development professionals, researchers and students will learn how climate change influences human mobility. By introducing key concepts like climate related migration, disaster displacement, planned relocation and trapped populations, this training will build capacities needed to consider human mobility in the context of climate change (HMCCC) in your respective field of work. The training showcases diverse examples from different countries on the phenomena of HMCCC as well as options how to manage it.

Now available on Adaptation Community: The new movie series “Living Adaptation” showcases best practice examples of climate change adaptation measures in agriculture and rural development. It contains four short video clips presenting best practices from GIZ India, Madagascar, Ethiopia, and a regional project in southern Africa. The accompanying overarching movie, titled “Pathways to Climate Resilient Agri-Food Systems” and published by BMZ, briefly introduces the topic of climate change adaptation in agriculture and rural development more broadly – and gives a quick glimpse into the various country experiences.

During June and July 2023, Private Adaptation Finance (PAF) organized the kick-off events for the second cohort of the Private Adaptation Investment Bootcamp (PrivABoo) program. The main objective of these events was to formally launch the program and outline the activities and expected outcomes for 18 selected small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda and Pakistan.

Germany joins the international Agroecology Coalition, thereby strengthening its commitment to sustainable and socially just agriculture and future-proof rural areas. Through its holistic approach, agroecology contributes to the greatest challenges of our time: climate protection, the fight against hunger and the preservation of biodiversity.

This new report, which suggests to link Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) with agroecological approaches to transform our agri-food systems in a climate resilient and nature-friendly way, is now online! It outlines three case studies applying the approach in India, Kenya, and Guatemala, providing practical steps to merge agroecology and EbA to adapt agricultural landscapes to climate change.

After the successful launch in Thailand in May 2023, the “Enhancing Risk Assessments (ERA) for Improved Country Risk Financing Strategies” project now officially commenced in its second project country Egypt with the kick-off workshop that took place on June 13-14, 2023 in Cairo.

The new methodological guide to learn about common approaches on conducting socio-economic & ecosystem services analyses for agroecology projects is now online. To allow for better evidence-based decision making, this publication provides a methodological guidance for project implementers and researchers.

Soil protection and rehabilitation (SPR) technologies provide several advantages, including benefits for mitigation and adaptation. Two new publications on SPR provide a guide for systematically assessing its adaptation relevance. Additionally, an Excel tool is published to implement the approach.

On March 1st and 2nd 2023  the 10th Sankalp Africa Summit took place in Nairobi, Kenya. “The Secret to adaptation investment” was a session curated by GIZ and DFC at the Sankalp Africa Summit. The panel session brought together stakeholders including investors, adaptation & resilience businesses, and intermediary institutions to discuss the experience in promoting the adaptation ecosystem in different capacities.

On February 7th and 8th 2023 a workshop on adaptation and disaster risk financing took place in Lusaka as part of the AGRICA risk financing component. The climate risk analyses for adaptation planning in sub-Saharan Africa (AGRICA) project aims at providing scientific evidence on climate risks in the agricultural and water sector and suggesting suitable adaptation measures.

The GIZ-implemented and IKI-funded Global Project on Mainstreaming Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) is coming to a close by the end of February 2023. Functioning as a knowledge hub on the topic of EbA, the project has facilitated various spaces for peer-to-peer exchange and learning such as the international EbA Community of Practice Workshops, the EbA Knowledge Days or many webinars, which are now available online.
