Togo: Kick-off workshop of GIZ’s support activities for National Adaptation Planning (NAP)

In December 2013, more than 40 stakeholders from the public sector and the civil society assisted in the kick-off workshop for a new NAP support activity by GIZ and the Togolese Ministry of Environment and Forest Resources in Lomé, Togo. The objective of the measure is to improve the preconditions for effective medium and long-term national adaptation planning in Togo through capacity development, knowledge brokerage, and technical advisory, particularly focusing on strategy development.

During the workshop, the existing guidance on NAP by UNFCCC as well as GIZ’s approaches for supporting the process were presented. The Togolese UNFCCC focal point presented current climatic conditions and projected climate change impacts for Togo as well as first experiences with adaptation planning at various levels. The participants highlighted a need for capacity development on NAP and the participation of all key stakeholders in the process. In the afternoon session, specific know-how needs as well as relevant stakeholders were identified in working groups. Based on these consultations, an operational plan for the upcoming 18 months was developed.
