The factsheet “Strengthening systemic local solutions for combating land degradation through agroecology” provides insights how agroecology contributes to achieving land degradation neutrality (LDN) under the UN Convention on Combating Desertification (UNCCD), specifically within its 2018-2030 strategic framework.
It demonstrates that agroecological approaches are strongly aligned with the strategic objectives of the UNCCD, as both address the ecological, economic and socio-political changes necessary to achieve LDN. Agroecological principles can complement sustainable land management approaches to strengthen the implementation of land restoration policies and programmes.
With its holistic approach, agroecology offers global environmental benefits for combating land degradation, adapting to and mitigating climate change and halting biodiversity loss. It is, therefore, a good example of showcasing synergies between the three Rio Conventions on desertification and land degradation (UNCCD), climate change (UNFCCC) and biodiversity (CBD).
