Unless countries chose to amend their INDCs before ratifying the Paris Agreement, these documents became their first nationally determined contributions (NDCs). According to Article 7.9 of the Paris Agreement all Parties shall, as appropriate, engage in the formulation and implementation of national adaptation planning processes, such as the national adaptation plan (NAP) process. This publication is primarily for policymakers, decision-makers and practitioners who are working on climate change adaptation at a national level (e.g. ministries of environment, climate change focal points, and adaptation and sectoral experts).
Drawing on experience in 11 countries and the European Union, this paper provides core elements and concrete examples for jointly advancing these agendas, with a focus on five challenges: coordinating institutions, aligning national climate and SDG-relevant targets, mainstreaming both set of goals into policy planning, optimizing financial resources, and building mutually reinforcing monitoring and reporting frameworks.
The IPCC confirms that human mobility does not have a single cause but rather emerges from multiple factors. These include poverty and demographic pressure, bad governance, depletion of natural resources or armed conflicts and violence. Economic reasons, especially regional income disparities between rural and urban areas, remain the most significant drivers of move-ment. However, climate change is an additional driver.
Moving from pilots to mainstreaming – opportunities and challenges of scaling up Ecosystem-based Adaptation: As a UNFCCC SB48 side event, the 3rd EbA Knowledge Day brought together UN negotiators, policy makers, practicioners, researchers and donors working on issues relevant to climate adaptation, ecosystem management and human resilience.
This case study was developed as part of a series on the national adaptation planning (NAP) process in selected countries, looking at specific climate risks as well as the governance structure and policy framework
This case study was developed as part of a series on the national adaptation planning (NAP) process in selected countries, looking at specific climate risks as well as the governance structure and policy framework. It provides an update on the current NAP process, showing first lessons learned and giving an outlook on the next steps to be taken in the iterative NAP process, considering how it contributes to reaching national adaptation goals.

Experiences from practitioners on how to set up monitoring and evaluation (M&E) systems and indicators for monitoring and evaluating adaptation results and linking M&E specific to Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) to other monitoring and reporting systems. This learning brief is a result of a learning and dialogue workshop, including three technical sessions, held within the 2nd international EbA Community of Practice Workshop that was conducted between 21 and 24 August 2017 in Bangkok, Thailand.
